DiversityLeads: A Conversation with Dr. Wendy Cukier

Many boards have recognized the benefits of diversity at the board table and have made progress on increasing the gender, race, age, and ethnic diversity of their board members, particularly with respect to gender diversity. There is less consensus, however, on what the board’s oversight role is regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Whether or not individual boards viewed oversight of human capital management and workforce diversity as part of their role in the past, investors, other stakeholders, and an increasing number of boards now view it as an important board responsibility, with heightened expectations in these areas, including the oversight of diversity-related strategy and risks.

Other stakeholders, including employees, customers, consumers, government and the general public are also looking to boards to lead in this area. A company’s approach to human capital management is a critical factor in fostering an inclusive, diverse and engaged workforce, which contributes to business continuity, innovation and long-term value creation.

Dr. Wendy Cukier explores ways that boards can provide oversight of their organization’s strategy on diversity, equity, and inclusion through a risk management lens, including important tools to mitigate that risk.

For many years, Dr. Cukier has assisted organizations in becoming more inclusive through innovative programs such as DiversityLeads, which tracks progress, impediments, and evidence-based strategies for promoting diversity in organizations.
