Boards are ultimately responsible for the long-term success of their organizations. This means that spending quality time on their organization’s future direction—their insight and foresight responsibilities—must be one of the central elements of the board’s activities.

Experience would tell us, however, that by the time boards discharge their hindsight and oversight duties, there is generally precious little time for them to contribute to key forward-looking matters such as strategy, risk, and talent / succession planning that will have the greatest impact on their organization’s long-term success.

It may seem that we never have enough time, however, maybe the truth is that we aren’t clear on our priorities! The pace of change in today’s business environment requires boards to make quality time on every meeting agenda for these important conversations. But how do we practically do that?
